Migraine
Headache Symptoms
Typical migraine headache symptoms are as
follows
-
Pain is normally only on one side of
the head, sometimes pain may be on both sides or switch from side
to side.
-
Pain is usually described as
throbbing and can be mild or so severe that it totally
incapacitates the sufferer.
-
Pain is almost always accompanied by
feelings of nausea and severe vomiting.
-
Eyes are very sensitive and need to
be covered to block out any light.
-
Blurred Vision is very common among
sufferers.
-
Sounds seem to be exaggerated and
need to be kept at a minimum.
-
There may also be an intolerance
regarding foods or odors.
-
Migraine Headache Symptoms can last
from a few hours to several days or
longer.
There are Four recognised stages of a Migraine these are
-
The Prodromal
Phase - These symptoms occur anything from a few
hours to a couple of days prior to the attack and can be
very slight signals, such as mood changes, being overly tired
or overly energetic. Little signs that are not your normal
behavior. Lots of sufferers do not even recognise these signals
until after the migraine, then they will say 'That is why I was
feeling that way'
The Aura
Phase - This occurs in about 10% of migraine
sufferers. Symptoms are varied such as Visual Loss, Visual
Hallucinations, Visual Illusions,
weakness,
numbness, prickling sensations,
Body Image Disturbances,
out-of-body experiences and felt
presences, depersonalization, derealisaztion,
tinnitus (buzzing in the ears)
hallucinations of odours and smells not
actually present, Speech & Language
Symptoms, Feeling of
déjà vu, Time Perception Disturbances,
Dreaming.
The Headache
Phase - The
actual throbbing Migraine
The Resolution
& Recovery Phase - Total rest and
sleep
This is followed by what is termed as a
Migraine
Interval. Certain Cognitive changes can occur at this
time as the body and mind try to get back to a degree of
normality.
Common migraine has no actual
forewarning signals whereas Classical
migraine has a group of symptoms preceding
the attack. As described above in 'AURA'
One can have the classical Aura symptoms
but not go through the actual migraine headache
phase.
Other
forms of Migraine
Basilar artery migraine involves a
disturbance of the basilar artery in the brainstem. Symptoms
include severe headache, vertigo, double vision, slurred speech,
and poor muscle coordination. This condition occurs mainly in
young people.
Carotidynia, also known as facial
migraine, produces deep, dull, aching, and sometimes piercing pain
in the jaw or neck. There is usually tenderness and swelling over
the carotid artery in the neck. Episodes can occur several times
weekly and last a few minutes to hours. This type occurs more
commonly in older people.
Ophthalmoplegic migraine starts in the
eye and is accompanied by vomiting. As the headache progresses, the
eyelid droops and nerves responsible for eye movement become
paralyzed. Known as 'Ptosis' this condition may persist for
days or weeks.
Status
migraine is rare and involves intense pain that
usually lasts longer than 72 hours. This condition usually requires
the patient to be hospitalized.
