How to set up Drip Irrigation for your Vegetable Garden

A Drip Irrigation system, if properly installed can use up to 75% less water than  sprinklers that produce a fine spray. Having the water drip directly onto the plant roots in the garden beds, shrubberies and pot plants reduces the effect of water wastage due to drift wind and overspray. Drip Irrigation systems are low cost, easy to install and easy to move around.

You will find a wide range of drip tubes and weeping hoses at your local gardening centre or you can buy complete irrigation kits.

STEP OUT YOUR GARDEN

You need to determine how much tubing and how many outlets you'll need. Draw an outline of your garden including features such as your house, taps and what plants are where.

INSTALL YOUR SYSTEM

To install your Drip Irrigation system, unroll the tubing and let it unkink in the sun. Following your system plan, lay out the tubing and other components near where they'll be used. Make sure you fit a backflow valve to all taps you'll be using on the watering system - these are compulsory in some states. This will stop contaminated water from flowing into your household irrigation pipes. Areas with high water pressure may require a pressure reducing valve.

Connections

Now that you have your pipe and attachments correctly placed, attach them to your tubing by punching the connections through the tube. You may need to vary your design with extensions and side lines.

FLUSHING

Once you have finished your design, adding in corner attachments and drippers, make sure you flush the system to remove debris which could block the flow of water. Once flushed, attach the stopper to the end of the tube.

TIP

• Night watering and covering your system with mulch is recommended to reduce evaporation.

• It is a good idea to clean out and check your system as drippers can become blocked. At least once a year, unseal the end of the system and flush it through.

• Drip Irrigation systems discharge at a fixed rate (2 litres, 4 litres or 8 litres an hour), but you can also buy variable flow drippers.

• There are a wide variety of tap timers to choose from.
