Growing Herbs
Herb Gardening - Getting Started
With Herbs
Growing Herbs is ideal for the novice gardener.
They are very easy to care for, do well in poor soil and
require little or no fertilizer. Most herbs are insect
resistant and do not require constant pruning.
Once you've selected the types of herbs you
want to grow make sure you have the right tools for the job.
Herbs don't require a large hole when planted
from cuttings, and seeds are sown very near the surface. A spike or
fork will be helpful for aerating
compacted soil, especially for new seeds.
Herbs like good
drainage.
If you want to optimize your herbs occasional
pruning is helpful. That means a pair of pruning shears is a must. Ordinary scissors
have their uses in the garden - cutting twine, snipping small stems
and so forth. But, a pair of sharp pruning shears is essential for
trimming those thicker stems and other tasks.
Herbs require less
water than most other plants and one of the most
common mistakes when growing herbs is overwatering. A small
watering can with a series of small holes in the nozzle will make
it easier to control the amount of water given. These are ideal for
container-grown herbs and small areas.
Larger herb gardens will need some kind of
watering system. Unless
you have lots of time on your hands, an automatic system will be
best. Fortunately, a simple drip or
soaker hose system is easy to set up and
inexpensive. Some will require replacement every couple of years
depending on your climate.
Laying down a 3-4
inch layer of mulch after you plant can help
minimize the need for weeding later. It also helps with soil
composition. Mulch can be made from wood chips, bark, gravel or
even shredded newspapers - or all of them combined. Just leave
about an inch in diameter of space around the base of the plant
when you mulch. That will avoid any excess buildup of moisture and
heat.

Tombs uncovered in
Mesopotamia (now Iraq) as old as 60,000 years held remains of
medicinal herbs preserved with the humans buried there. Over 5,000
years ago, Ancient Egyptians had acquired an extensive catalog of
plants (many of them herbs) that could be used as laxatives, relief
for headaches and other ailments. Thyme was used as far back as
3,000 BC in Sumaria as an antiseptic.
The Greek physician
Hippocrates (460 BC – 377 BC) used many herbs in his treatment
of illness, believing that disease had natural causes contrary to
many contemporaries who held that it was inflicted by gods. He used
