Depression Signs Symptoms

There are a variety of different types of depression.  These include Manic or Bipolar depression, Postpartum depression, Dysthimia, Cyclothemia, and Seasonal Affective Disorder.  There is also Clinical depression, which is sometimes called “major” depression.  “Clinical depression” is actually the medical term that doctors use whenever they refer to depression.

Clinical Depression Signs Symptoms

These are characterized by the inability to concentrate; loss of appetite; feelings of extreme sadness, helplessness, guilt, hopelessness; insomnia; thoughts of death.or suicide; a loss of interest in things that the person usually enjoys; irritability; and chest pain (you should always get chest pain checked out immediately as it may also be a sign of a serious health problem).

There are also physical symptoms of depression which include: headaches, back pain, muscle aches, joint pain, digestive problems (a feeling of queasy or nauseous), diarrhea, chronic constipation, change in appetite or weight, a loss of appetite or a craving for certain foods such as carbohydrates.  If you already have any of these physical problems, you will discover that they will become worse if you are depressed.

You should also know that it is not unusual to feel sad or depressed occasionally.  During these times you can try to manage the depression on your own through natural remedies such as finding a hobby, getting involved with sports, or exercising.  However, if these things do not work for you, then you should definitely consult a doctor.

Bipolar Depression Signs Symptoms

Bipolar disorder is also known as manic depression.  Oftentimes, people who suffer from this disorder have been described as moody, melancholy, and dark.

Manic depression is defined as a treatable psychological disorder.  However, it is important to understand that this disorder is not curable.  In this disorder, periods of depression oftentimes exchange themselves for periods of extreme happiness.  The type of imbalance a person has is what divides manic depression into Bipolar Type I and Bipolar Type II.  People who suffer with Bipolar Type I have low to mild depression and severe manic high periods, which often require hospitalization.  On the other hand, a person who suffers with Bipolar Type II has low to mild manic high periods and severe depression.

A normal state of mania includes a slight increase in energy, which leads to difficulty concentrating because their thoughts are often running full speed ahead.  Normally this can be seen in that they are involved in a greater number of social activities and tend to talk a lot more than normal.

The extreme form of mania is known as hypomania.

During times when a patient is suffering from hypomania they are a lot more active than normal and they also tend to become anxious, a lot easier.  Also during the hypomania state, a patient is much more talkative, takes more chances than they would normally take, and can go for a lengthy period of time without sleeping.  Oftentimes they will also feel as though they love everybody and everything whenever they are in a state of hypomania.
