Pets provide us with love and companionship and add pleasure and enjoyment to the life of millions of
people
A pet lover myself, I could not imagine living without one. In my early childhood we had a Golden Labrador, named ‘Dan’. My
mum used to send me down to the local shop with my trusted companion ‘Dan’, he used to carry the shopping bag, which was a large cane basket
with a round handle that he would grip in his mouth. On one particular day, I think there was a loaf of bread in the basket, well for some
particular and very unusual reason, ‘Dan’ put the basket down on the ground and politely lifted his leg and did you know what all over the
bread. I wish he could have told us why on earth he did that but we will never know. It’s funny I still remember that. ‘Ah’ the joys of being
a pet owner.
Any pet can be a great source of love and companionship, especially so for the elderly. Home care workers and Nursing homes
are now recommending companion animals to help the elderly lead happy, healthy lives in the following areas:-
Ø Companionship – A lot of elderly people live alone and may have little
or no contact with relatives or friends A pet can give them a sense of being needed, bring a little love into their
life and keep them active.
Ø Love – We all like to receive and give affection. A friendly touch of a dog’s nose or their favorite pussy-cat snuggling up beside them, gives an elderly
person a feeling of reassurance, of being loved and needed.
Ø Health – Did you know that stroking your pet can lower blood pressure
and lift depression? Not to mention the benefit of daily exercise for the heart and muscles.
Ø Exercise – Caring for pets keep seniors active both mentally and
physically. Dogs need to be walked and gets the elderly out of their home, into fresh air and the sunshine. Also while out walking they are
likely to meet other people to chat to.
Ø Responsibility – Having a Pet that depends on them, gives
an elderly person a sense of independence, motivation and boosts their self esteem.
