Bad Breath In Children and Pets
We know that adults can suffer from Bad Breath but what about
Bad Breath in children or your pets?
Bad Breath In
Children
The simplest cause of bad breath in children is
a lack of dental hygiene. The bacteria that feed on stagnant saliva
or on particles of food left in the mouth are the cause of
classical bad breath, especially for morning bad breath. Children
can suffer from bad breath all day if they don’t take
brushing their teeth seriously. They should brush their teeth at
least twice a day: once in the morning and once before they go to
bed, otherwise food residue can exist on the tonsil cavities and
cause bad smells
Other important issues can
be
- Cavities. A deep cavity can cause
unbearable toothache, but a superficial cavity may only cause bad
breath.
- Chronic Sinusitis with bad breath.
Symptoms of this include halitosis, couching, fever and
yellow-green nose secretions.
- Throat infections. As in
sinusitis, the bad smell can be caused by the bacterial infection
and by the bacteria that exist within stagnant saliva because the
nose is not used whilst breathing.
- Seasonal allergies can be another
cause, because mucus backs up into the pharynx. This may be
accompanied by a dry coughing which is irritating at night, eye
itching and nose secretions.
What parents must do?
It's important that children learn good
oral hygiene habits from an early age. Parents need to tell
their children the importance of brushing their teeth and tongue
after eating. Choose an appropriate toothbrush and fluoride
toothpaste designed especially for children. It is also very
important to renew toothbrushes regularly, especially after any
infection, such as a cold.
Do not let the children use mouthwash! It may be
refreshing, but it is just a substitute and may not be efficient
when brushing their teeth. It may also be too strong for them and
actually kill the good bacteria in their mouth thus making them
more prone to infection.
Children must go periodically to the dentist, as
adults do. This must happen at least once a year (preferably every
six months) from the age of 2-3. Getting your children into the
habit of going to the dentist on a regular basis ensures you give
them good habits for the rest of their lives.
Bad
Breath Dogs or Cats
The reason for your pet having bad
breath is the same as for humans: they don’t
frequently brush their teeth. Cats don't seem to have the same
problem with bad breath as do dogs; however some of them still on
occasion suffer problems with halitosis or bad breath.
If
your dog or cat has continuous bad breath check their back molar
teeth. You may see a grey or brown color surface on the back of
their back molars. This is tartar and the cause of the terrible
smell. These molars might need descaling to solve the problem.
The bacteria in your pets mouth is causing the bad breath,
this can lead to gum disease and abscesses. If gum
infections are ignored , your pet could contract a serious
infection in their bloodstream, causing the infection to be carried
to other parts of the body and may ultimately result in the death
of your pet.
When dealing with the bad breath of your pet, you
can use special toothpastes especially formulated for animals which
contain enzymes that remove the tartar on their teeth. You may have
a problem keeping your cat's teeth clean and healthy as cats do not
cooperate as well as dogs do, but it is important that your cat's
teeth are kept healthy as well as a dogs.
Bad breath of your cat or dog is more than a
cosmetic problem and must not be ignored. If you have
difficulty in brushing your pet's teeth, make an appointment to see
your vet, they will be happy to do it for you though of course they
will charge a fee.
